The setup for the music video shoot started at three. The time was spent painting wooden boxes to use for the photography shoot setting. I myself as well as painting the boxes had to head into the local town to pick up food for the cast and crew on the day of the shoot.

The day started off in a typical manner for a shoot day as we predicted, we were able to predict this due to our experience with our AS-Level thriller opening sequences, which taught us how to act and what to do on the shoot. We got the actors ready and after many times of Olivia reminding to bring the outfits that the cast need, she, herself, forgot the costume. This delay didn't cause us to start late as we hadn't finished setting up the day before so we finished that and by the time we had finished, Liv was back, the cast was ready and we were prepared to shoot.

At first, we decided to film the performance aspect of the song, this is due to that fact that if anything bad happens throughout the day and we are unable to use some of the footage, we will have the performance videos to edit, this assures that we have a plan B incase anything goes wrong. In the studio, filmmakers are relying on the fact that everything work and will work though out the entire shoot, however a light could blow or the filmmaker could break the camera, and in the eventuality of the unlikely event of that happening you have shots that you can use as a safety.

The Studio looked very simplistic, yet was a very nice aesthetic being minimalist, it consisted of the band, the instruments, a black backdrop, and a circular grid of spotlights for the first set. For the seconds set, we used a vanity mirror, an infinity loop and multiple coloured boxes, this was to give it a photography shoot styling. I believed this deviated from the original concept, however, in a good way, the final product will end up as more of a performance video instead of the behind the scenes video we originally thought, however, it may be for the better.

We gave each other fixed roles in which we had to stick to on the shoot day, Emily was the floor manager, Olivia was the director, Catherine was the photographer and I was camera operator.

I think that my camera work was good, some of the shots looked really nice and on some of the takes, I ended up directing as well as filming, so, I think I took charge well in moments when the situation was in need of it.

There was only one main problem on the shoot day and it was over a very trivial issue, this issue being the positioning of a food table, Olivia wanted it in the shot and I did not, we came to a compromise of moving its positioning, so I sneakily moved it out of frame and filmed around it as it looked severely out of place in the setting of the music video.

The shoot day was successful in my opinion as I was able to leave the set with a piece of work that I was genuinely proud of what i made.

I wish on the shoot day, that I would've been allowed more creative control as the dictation of what I needed to do even though I disagreed was annoying, however, I was always able to argue my own side and sometimes they would see my point of view and sometimes they would shut my views down.

I think we managed the actors well, they were well behaved all day and seemed to be enjoying it and at the end of the day they all thanked me and the crew for them being a part of the music video.

I enjoyed working with the blackmagic the most, I was happy to be behind a camera again and actually film something properly again and being able to be the mediator between director and audience.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the tracking shot turned out on the big screen as it is one of the only shots we used the track for and while filming I thought it looked really good.

As a team, even with the quarrels, we worked well as a team, and managed to tolerate each other even when we were sick to the teeth of the other members by about lunchtime, we managed to pull through to the end of the day and pat each other on the back and congratulate eachother for making the video.

I think if I came into the shoot with the mindset that everything about your idea can change in an instant as it did with the music video shoot, so be prepared for change but advocate to stay true to the original idea

The website has taken on a rudimentary form of design now. The design will use a panel interface similar to the idea of the google material design project, which creates a more simple a natural interaction experience as it shows the content as having different layers to it and makes the website look less cluttered there isn't lots of things squashed together, instead, the two layers allows the user interface to be less cluttered

Today we had an editing tutorial from our editor in residence, Matt. He explained to us the essentials of editing including the three main rules of editing, he insisted that we take notes during the session so this is a post that consists of the notes that I took during that talk.

Context sensitive, preview, bins and timeline - where the clips are found (bins), where they go (timeline) and where they're seen (preview)

Sync up iPad screen with music

Shot in the studio, match up with the iPad screen timecode - will make it easier to match performance and song in the edit

Either in sync or not - make sure everything is in sync!

Sync with a completely random number 

Bass and snare, to sync up with audio 

Take time to make sure everything is in sync - will look absolutely awful if the performance is out of sync with the song

Picture sync is a lot more reliable -light travels faster than sound, therefore, being able to match the video with the song will be more accurate than trying to match the sound with the song

Make sure all clips are named, ordered - makes cutting to a clip in the timeline faster as you are able to tell which clip is being edited

GROUP YOUR SHOTS TOGETHER

Pictorial match (cutting the flow of music) - seeing camera movements and cuts in time with the rhythm of a song makes the video flow more and seem more fluid

Aim for final cut first instead of rough cut - creating a rough cut will make the editor work less hard on what they are doing as it is only a rough cut so it will almost always be extremely average. If you aim to make the final cut first, then it will be of higher quality and will have been worked on harder

When editing a music video, do 10 seconds at a time - the task seems daunting and alost impossible when editing the 3 minute video which can discourage an editor, so if you break the task into small chunks, it will seem easier to do

Don't show anyone what you are working on - they may criticise good work, which could lead to disruption of a project that genuinely works

The feedback is mostly positive and the audience liked our idea saying it was enjoyable to watch, even when it was cut to the full length of the track. To move forward from our feedback, we have created a list of the five main elements we need to improve and we will sort them out.

For a test shoot, it was successful and that is leading the group to feel hopeful.

What we can do to fix the problems
-Olivia is getting a real trumpet to fix the fake trumpet problem
-We will have a third and maybe fourth element in the final product
-Reconsidered Gabbi's costume, the old one made her look very young, the new one makes her look a bit more like she could be the true artist of the song
-More costumes have been provided by the cast, with cool suits for one of the other elements
-To create a distinction between what is behind the scenes we will change the colour grade and lighting and maybe add channel tags
-The middle 8 will also involve the third and fourth element to make it more dynamic

The original costume for Gabby (our lead singer) we thought wouldn't be too bad, however, we thought about it as something seemed wrong, we realised that the singer looked too young in the costume as the colour scheme looked rather childish and her height made the age look a lot younger than she is, we have since changed the costume and resolved the issue so it looks more like she would be the kind of person that would be able to sing the song that we have chosen for the music video.

For August (our trumpet player), he has a completely different style, he is very tall and has long hair so it was difficult to choose a costume for him, we decided to choose an oversized look with bell bottom trousers and a funky shirt, in the shoot he won't be wearing the hoody.

All of our group have got a photo that puts our phone numbers together, this is so that if any of us needs to contact another member of the group, for whatever reason, we all have each others numbers.
In the photo, obviously the numbers aren't finished, this is because it isn't a good idea to put each others numbers on the internet as that would make it easy for someone to contact us even though we have never spoken to them in the past.

We have been given all the cast for the music video that we asked for. We have gotten, Frankie Beetlestone, Gabby Gilliat, August Berner and Eddie Eglington. The cast have reassured us that they have learnt their role in the song thoroughly, this means that we can minimise the risk of them messing up their parts on the day, as that will only shorten a limited time period.

To reduce any errors of shooting on the day, we will use our timeline to guide us on exactly what to shoot, this gives us an almost script for the shots that we are going to use.

The costume for the band is following the theme of 70s bands as the song has a 70s twang to it with the various instruments. The band unanimously decided on the costuame and the style that we wanted as it is a style that we are all fond of, following a similar design to music greats from the 70s such as the Beatles sergeant peppers phase.

The cast has had to change. The lead singer for the band has left the video and we have searched for a new lead singer. We found a girl called Gabby who is in the same house as the rest of the band which makes them all very easy to rehearse. The rest of the band is the same, we have August Berner, Eddie Eglington and Frankie Beetlestone. The new cas fit the music video well as shown from the screen-capture above. They fit the archetypal 70s band look which was the thing that we e
wanted to display in the music video.

|I struggled editing the video as there was not enough elements that we could do on the the day of the test shoot, however, I was still able to produce a test shoot and on the day when we have an extra element, it should be easier to film.

A rather heated discussion with the group and an almost intervention from our teachers may have created tensions within the group, however, are at least working on a new and improved idea. The constant shapeshifting of our idea has led to confusion in the group which I believe is the origin of the conflict, my sensical understanding of the idea removes the idea of the girl watching tv and the band appearing across the different channels, instead, it is now a behind the scenes styled performance video between photoshoots, makeup, and performing.
                    
                    
The Birdman aesthetic is for the make up scene with the light bulbs around the mirror, the behind the scene photoshoots will look like the middle gif and it is undecided but we may have them in between sets.

The redesign of the music video leads us to commit even more to a seventies styling of the band which we will do with costume.

For the four set designs that we need to make, we have decided to simplify common sets that would be associated with the genre that we are portraying with the sets

stick to a common theme that is seen within modern music videos which is bright colourful lights and maybe mirrors as seen within the fashion walkway scene in the neon demon

A common layout is the podiums with people behind them and two podiums in the middle and instead of having a board to show the scores, do it in graphics that we can make in after effects, make it similar to shows like a league of their own and family feud

Chat Show

The stereotypical set of two sofas and a table, put them in front of a green screen and add a city scape behind them as that is the typical set make it similar to shows like Jimmy Fallon and Jonathan Ross

Have someone taking the photos of the band with them posing and the lead singer lip syncing while having the photos taken, make it similar to a keeping up with the Kardashians

Our cast list has been finalised.

The group and I have been debating about the lead singer of the band for quite a while and we finally came to an agreement. An added bonus of our cast is that they are all in the same house, which is the house that I am in, this makes rehearsals a lot easier as we will be able to get them together fairly easily. We chose our cast based on their look as we didn't want to get people that looked out of place in the music video, we have asked them all if they play or have played the instruments that we want them to, all three of them have said yes and the lead singer said that she is willing to do the video.

In our lessons this week we each made a prezi of artists that our similar to our chosen artist, Gin Wigmore.

After much deliberation of which genre we would put her in we still couldn't decide between blues rock and jazz pop, so we decided that she was both as a few of her songs are more blues rock and other such as beatnik trip (the song we are doing our music video to) are more jazz pop.

We sent a copyright request to Island Records for permission to use the song for the music video, we received no reply.

The idea has developed once again to instead of a neon triangle, it is different televisions and they go to different channels which the band appears on. The band will have four settings, a game show, a chat show, a behind the scenes of a photography shoot and a typical music video band performance style. Each different setting will have to adhere to a different style that is associated with that specific type of media, such as, interviews being static tripod shots that look like they are done on a multi camera set up, behind the scenes photography videos will be handheld and have a lot of movement the game show is similar to the interview but much brighter and the music video will be colourful and a lot of movement.

This is the treatment for our first idea.

The second idea is a performance, video which starts off in black and white which saturates over the time of the music video. The video will take place in a recording studio, it incorporates fluorescent lights and an interesting front man who is a dancer with a lot of energy and a band playing with a lot of energy too, it involves invisible cuts, quick pans and slow tracks towards the band members. The video would be similar to Les Cactus by The Last Shadow Puppets

The Last Shadow Puppets music video works because of how charismatic the lead singer is in the video. He is jumping across the studio dancing in a very strange way and the studio is cluttered and gives a lot to look at which keeps a seemingly boring performance video look incredibly interesting. To make our video like this, we had to find a studio which is large enough to film in, reasonably priced, a bit cluttered and local, we found two that are fairly close, Empire recording studios and aja studios were our two choices, and seeing as aja is cheaper and closer, it seems like that is the one that we will choose.
We chose the song 'your soul' by coasts as we wanted an indie rock song and coasts were the perfect band as they aren't extremely well known and the song does not have a music video.
