Poster Analysis

On the 'Inception' (2010) poster, the importance of characters is shown through their positioning. The main character, played by Leonardo DiCaprio is stood closest to the front, and also is standing in the middle, this means that he will likely the first person that people see on the poster, this will also draw in audiences as Leonardo DiCaprio was a 3 time Oscar nominee by the time that this film was released, this gives the audience an assurance of quality to the film. Alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, actors such as Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Michael Caine and Ken Watanabe are shown. These other actors are also well-known and well-liked, this is another assurance of quality for the audience, however, these actors are shown behind Leonardo DiCaprio, this shows that they are in the film, but not as predominantly as DiCaprio.

The characters in the poster are all looking forwards toward the camera and not at the backdrop where the road is being curved upwards, until it's out of the frame. This shows that they're unsurprised by this and makes the setting seem like it's almost normal to the characters. The backdrop of the poster also makes the characters look small and shows that they're not in control.

The poster has a tagline, which is near the top of the poster, it says 'YOUR MIND IS THE SCENE OF THE CRIME.' The tagline creates a sense of mystery around the film. Above the tagline, their is the cast list that has a lot of names in small lettering and above it is Leonardo DiCaprio's name is large spaced out lettering, this also reinforces him as the main character. The title of the film is also written in large red font. The colour red has connotations with danger, this shows that their is going to be action, violence and danger in the film. Above the title, their is writing saying 'A FILM BY CHRISTOPHER NOLAN' and also bellow the title it says 'FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE DARK KNIGHT' Christopher Nolan at the time of the release for 'Inception' (2010) was very well known for his Batman films 'Batman Begins' (2005) and 'The Dark Knight' (2008), this is a final seal of quality for the film.

The films release date is in the summer, this is when children are off school and would want to go to the cinema. The way that the film gets the people into the cinema is through the cast and director mostly as they are well trusted and are usually involved with good films. The mind-bending effects also entice the viewer as it shows it will be an enjoyable film.
